Solvent selection considerations for ASTM D7647

Background

CINRG particle counters are designed specifically to test samples according to ASTM D7647 which uses sample dilution to eliminate known soft particle interferences such as water, varnish and dispersed additives (i.e. silicone-based anti-foaming additives). We recommend a diluent of 75% Toluene and 25% IPA since Toluene is an excellent solvent for problematic oil additives and degradation products, while the IPA in the mixture will dissolve up to 2% of water contamination. When using other solvents it is important to ensure that miscibility of the types of samples that you will be testing in the solvent. The following materials will help guide you in your choice of solvent selection.
